ERROL “BUDOY” MARABILES, M-16 ng Samar

THE FRONT man for the Cebu-based reggae band “Jr. Kilat,” Errol Marabiles, 33, aka Budoy, espouses ethnic culture and traditions, particularly of the natives of the Visayas.

Like the lumad of Samar, he wears a headpiece that covers his hair, and his left arm is adorned with a cool tattoo that evokes, he said, the traditions of these natives.

“I would have worn a bahag if it wouldn’t shock you,” he said.

“What I’m trying to do,” he explained, “is to inject tradition into modern culture. Like, I’m wearing jeans, which is Western, and this butong (the headpiece). So the change is gradual.”

This subtle integration of heritage and Western culture is also embodied in his songs, one of which, “M-16,” had been named last year’s Best Song in the NU Rock Awards.

“This is the only song with Cebuano lyrics that got an NU Rock Award,” he pointed out. “Usually, the winning songs have English or Filipino lyrics.”

Budoy takes pride in the fact that he only acquired a television set recently, which is why he has yet to see an episode of “Pinoy Big Brother.”

“I live in the outskirts of Cebu,” said Budoy. “I like to be close to nature.”

He is also proudly vegetarian.

But for all his nature trips, Budoy acknowledges the power of television.

“I have this cable show on TV that is shown only in the Visayas region,” he explained. “What happened was people began to recognize me on the streets. This is just shown on cable, ha. What more if I am seen on national TV.”
